When we sit down in our chairs an hour before sunrise, the eastern horizon of the bay is already lit with a yellow tinged, orange haze. Not counting the early morning joggers, there is only one other couple to witness the Solstice sunrise. I’m surprised. I expected a large group of light worshippers, wicca adherents, pagan participants and curious onlookers. Only a dolphin and several pelicans join us.

At the appointed time, the sun rises slowly over the horizon. The glowing horizon that was waiting overwhelms the its entrance. Turning from a faint orange glow into an increasingly brilliant white light, the sun takes command of the stage and rises eloquently in a burst of energy. Within minutes, the world awakens and birds, squirrels, people are suddenly – as if they came over the horizon with the sun – flying, playing, walking. The contrast of the cool, dark, damp earth and the blazing light of the sun is never so apparent.

Every moment of every day, the sun is giving someone the gift of eternal possibilities that spills out from its light.
